North Wind’s Steven Herrera Recognized for Contribution to SAME

A HUGE congratulations to North Wind Infrastructure & Technology Project Engineer, Steven Herrera, P.E., for recently being inducted into the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Class of 2021 Academy of Fellows. He is one of 28 new Fellows recently welcomed into the Academy. The Fellows Class of 2021 has demonstrated over 10 years of service to the Society at the highest level of commitment and being a positive impact and role model. Representing the broad diversity of the SAME Society, they are the very best in SAME and the industry.

Steven served as President of the SAME Sacramento Post for 3 years (2016-2019) and has been an active member of the Post since 2006. Last year, he recently co-chaired the Post’s Golf Tournament in which over $17,000 was raised for the Post’s Scholarship fund. Also, as part of his involvement with the SAME, Steven serves as a mentor for the local DOD STARBASE, a Department of Defense Youth Outreach Program.

DoD STARBASE is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. At DoD STARBASE students participate in challenging “hands-on, minds-on” activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). They interact with military personnel to explore careers and observe STEM applications in the “real world.” The program provides students with 25 hours of stimulating experiences at National Guard, Marine, Air Force Reserve, Army, and Air Force bases across the nation.

DoD STARBASE’s primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEM opportunities as they continue their education. The academies serve students that are historically underrepresented in STEM. Students who live in inner cities or rural locations, those who are socio-economically disadvantaged, low in academic performance, or have a disability are in the target group. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them.

“It’s incredibly exciting and humbling to be inducted into the SAME Academy of Fellows. I look forward to continuing the SAME Mission including introducing our future leaders to the amazing world of engineering. To do so while representing both SAME and North Wind is a great privilege,” said Herrera.

Steven will be formally inducted in the SAME AOF in a ceremony later this year.
