UMTRA Project Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Shipping

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the first rail shipment of radioactive tailings from the “Pile” near the banks of the Colorado River – North Wind Portage has been DOE’s prime contractor for 7.5 of those 10 years and has safely removed and placed over 7 million tons in an engineered repository 30 miles away. 

In February, DOE and North Wind Portage began an accelerated schedule of removal, doubling weekly train shipments to Crescent Junction, where the disposal cell is located.
