Major Safety Milestone Met at the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative

Construction presses on at the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) located on the campus of USC Aiken. To mark a recent significant milestone, North Wind Construction Services held a Safety Award lunch and ceremony at the AMC project on June 27th. The luncheon celebrated the project meeting 77% completeness with over 155,000 man-hours worked without incident by the North Wind Construction Services Team and their subcontractors.

Two members of the Department of Energy were in attendance to commemorate this achievement:

Phillip Anthony (Tony) Polk, Assistant Manager for Nuclear Material Stabilization (AMNMS), AMC Federal Project Director (FPD), and formerly the Savannah River Laboratory Office (SRLO) Director.

Nixon Javier Peralta, Program Engineer and Advisor for Technical, Programmatic and Project Management; and AMC Deputy Federal Project Director (DFPD).

“Safety is extremely important, and you managed that with this project in an exemplary fashion,” said Tony Polk in his speech at the ceremony. He continued to say, “The work you all are doing here, the quality of it that is going into this facility, is something for not only me to be proud of, but for you all to be proud of as well. We can’t accomplish these things without all of you putting in the hard work on the ground to get it done.”

North Wind Site Services President, Allison Walker, was also in attendance along with 125 tradesmen and tradeswomen.

With recent progress at the site, the project is approximately three-quarters of the way complete and tracking on schedule. The team is starting to install exterior wall panels, and because the site is now 100% “dried in” with exterior doors and windows, they can get an early start conditioning the space. The remaining work turns towards the interior of the building this fall.

“I am incredibly proud of the attention to safety our team has displayed over the course of this project. North Wind’s collaborative efforts and commitment to safety have been and will continue to be the driving forces behind our success on this project,” said Brent Brooks, President of North Wind Construction Services.

We want to take a moment to thank our local AMC sponsors, USC Aiken, Lowes, Home Depot, The Alley Tap Room, United Rentals, and Pot Smokers BBQ, who catered the event. A special acknowledgment to Amy and Chase Kelly (site safety), who have demonstrated a personal dedication to promoting and safeguarding a safe worksite.

Set to be completed in the summer of 2025, the AMC will combine the unique capabilities of the DOE national laboratories, industrial enterprises, and educational institutions to drive practical, cost-effective solutions to many of the nation’s most challenging environmental cleanup and energy security challenges while supporting the long-term sustainability of the United States manufacturing sector. The facility is being built on the University of South Carolina Aiken campus.
