PMA Leads by Example
Portsmouth Mission Alliance, LLC (PMA), is the Infrastructure Support Services (ISS) contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Piketon Ohio (PORTS). PMA is comprised of North Wind Solutions, LLC and Swift and Staley, Inc., with subcontractor support from Leidos.
Key elements of the scope of work include, but are not limited to, the following: Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) Program; Engineering; Project Management; Property Management; Safeguards and Security; Computing, Telecommunications, and Cyber Security; Operations and Management of Assets (e.g., Maintenance Management); Facility Services (e.g., Grounds Maintenance); Records Management and Document Control (RMDC); Mail, Shipping, and Receiving Services; Environmental Information Center (EIC) Operations; and Training Services. Hazards associated with this scope are consistent with similar facility support contracts.
The ISS workforce has performed work since 2009 under the distinction of the DOE Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a STAR site. Since that time, the PMA safety program has grown into a model that others wish to emulate. A superior commitment to safety earned PMA their second “Legacy of Stars” award in 2018. PMA’s robust safety culture is demonstrated by the fact that the company has experienced zero lost workday cases or recordable injuries since April 2016.
In April 2019, PMA was recognized by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for safety excellence. PMA received three awards from the state: the 100% Award, the Group Award, and the Special Award.
In July 2019, PMA surpassed 1,000,000 safe work hours without a lost workday case or recordable injury. This is an especially significant safety milestone, as it spans infrastructure support service activities at the Portsmouth site over the past three years. Behind this achievement stands a solid safety culture with dedicated employee efforts that extend throughout the company. This achievement reflects establishing and maintaining exemplary safety standards, achieved through each employee’s ongoing commitment to safety, training, procedure adherence, and a genuine concern for the wellbeing of each other.
In August 2019, PMA received its fourth DOE “Star of Excellence” award, the ninth consecutive for the ISS contract.
Achieving safety excellence is not just about the awards, but rather the day-to-day commitment of all employees to ensure work is conducted safely. PMA employees have an outstanding work ethic, exhibit a questioning attitude, look for opportunities to improve, but most of all, work together to ensure the safety of each other.
As a DOE Star site, PMA will continuously search for new and innovative ways to improve safety performance. These achievements were made possible through individual commitment to safety and through the cooperative efforts of management and DOE.
