LBYD Wins Two Excellence in Construction Awards
Congratulations to our team at LBYD for their two recent wins in the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction Awards! The University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB) Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine & Data Science Building won the 1st Place Obelisk Award, and the Southern Research Building won the 2nd Place Merit Award, both in the Structural Engineering category.
The UAB Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building is a 175,000 SF, eight-story, concrete-framed medical research facility located in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. This transformative project repurposed two existing 1960s structures, seamlessly integrating them into a cohesive and modern research environment. Complementing the renovation, a new eight-story addition was constructed to expand the facility’s capabilities and footprint. With a construction budget of $80 million, the UAB Genomics Building represents a major investment in biomedical research and innovation, blending adaptive reuse with forward-thinking design.
The Southern Research Building, also in Birmingham, features a five-story medical research laboratory designed with a robust concrete beam-and-slab floor system to support advanced scientific operations. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge medical research equipment and was engineered to meet stringent vibration control requirements, ensuring optimal performance of sensitive instruments and experiments. With a total construction budget of $85 million, the project reflects a significant investment in medical research and innovation. The design and execution of the facility underscore a commitment to excellence in both structural performance and scientific advancement.
