Congratulations to our team at LBYD for their two recent wins in the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction Awards!
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine & Data Science Building earned the 1st Place Obelisk Award, while the Southern Research Building received the 2nd Place Merit Award. Both projects were recognized in the Structural Engineering category.
The UAB Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building is a 175,000-square-foot, eight-story, concrete-framed medical research facility located in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. This transformative project repurposed two existing 1960s structures, seamlessly integrating them into a cohesive, modern research environment. The renovation was complemented by a new eight-story addition that expanded both the building’s footprint and capabilities. With a construction budget of $80 million, the Genomics Building represents a significant investment in biomedical research and innovation, combining adaptive reuse with forward-thinking design.
Also located in Birmingham, the Southern Research Building is a five-story medical research laboratory designed to support advanced scientific operations. The structure features a robust concrete beam-and-slab floor system and was engineered to meet stringent vibration-control requirements, ensuring optimal performance for sensitive instruments and experiments. Equipped with cutting-edge research technology, the facility reflects a strong commitment to scientific excellence. With a total construction budget of $85 million, the project underscores the importance of both structural performance and innovation in medical research.
